Finding grantmakers with UKGrantmaking

UKGrantmaking is the definitive annual publication on grant funding in the UK.

It provides a comprehensive overview of who makes grants across all funding sectors – Government, Trusts and Foundations, National Lottery distributors, Donor-Advised Funds, and Charities.

It’s a free, interactive platform that collates and analyses information on grants made during the most recent year when published statutory accounts information was available.

This allows funders, sector bodies, policymakers, researchers, fundraisers, and sector media to access valuable data about the state of UK grantmaking in one place. You can download a full file of the data from the Methodology and Data page.

2. Find a funder by name

Open the file in Microsoft Excel or a similar spreadsheet program. Add filters to the file and filter on the name column to find a specific funder. To add filters in Excel, highlight your data range or click any cell within your table and go to the Data tab, then click the Filter button. This will place dropdown arrows on your column headers, allowing you to sort or hide specific data rows instantly. Alternatively, press Ctrl+F to bring up the ‘Find’ prompt box and type the grantmaker’s name.

For each funder, you will find data on their grantmaking, income, expenditure, and net assets, as well as charity regulator classifications, where available.

Note: Not all information is available for all organisations. The availability of data varies depending on the sources of information and the size of the organisation. The absence of a value in the data sheet does not necessarily mean it is zero; it may indicate that the information isn’t available.

3. Find a funder matching certain criteria

You may wish to filter by a specific segment, by grantmaking amount, by area of operation, or by regulator classifications, which cover who the charity supports and what they do. Use the filtering function in Excel (or a similar programme), you can select multiple filters to drill down to grantmakers that match certain criteria. Since some of the fields, such as Area of operation list multiple entries separated by semicolons, using the “Contains” text filter is the most effective way to ensure you capture both local and national entries.

Please also note that the Area of Operation fields identify the geographic regions where a charity is active based on self-declared data provided by the organisation. An organisation’s area of operation may be local (listing specific areas like “Barnet”), regional (listing several local authorities), or national listing “England” and/or “Wales”).

When using the filter, be aware that selecting a specific region will only show organisations focused on that area and will exclude those registered under broader categories like “England” or “England; Wales.” To capture all charities operating in a location, you should combine your filters to include both the specific local name and the broader national designations.

Note: The regulator classification data is provided only for grantmakers who are registered charities with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (CCEW).

4. Understand the grantmaking context

Explore the interactive UKGrantmaking platform for further insights into the grantmaking landscape to understand a particular organisation’s grantmaking in the context of the wider sector.
